Deck Guide of the Day: U/W Midrange

Hello Everyone, today’s Deck Guide of the Day comes straight from the Pro Tour Kaladesh Top8. So let’s start with our breakdown!

This deck is a mix between a “Flash” strategy and a midrange/control strategy. As your creatures you have Thraben Inspector and Reflector Mage as value cards. Then you have a bunch of spirits plus Archangel Avacyn.

So, the Inspector gives you value in the form of a clue, thus producing card draw, and as an early blockers/attackers for the first part of the game. The Mage, instead, is pure tempo value, granting you the ability to swing in with some creatures or giving you the time to find an answer to the threat you bounce back.

Then we have our spirits package. Rattlechains is our sort of spirits lord, giving all of our spirit creatures flash. This is quite nice because with it in play you can just simply play all of your cards on the opponent turn or end step, leaving the mana always open for the best answer. Then we have Selfless Spirit which s the other 2 drop creature in the deck. It’s a solid creature, 2 power flying creature with upside is nice, and the main function of the Spirit is basically to protect your team from sweepers or giving you favorable blockers. Spell Queller is simply awesome. It’s an all star in fighting the more combo or control decks, even though with is 2/3 body can not slow down the average creature. Anyway, the tempo swing the Queller can provide is inescapable for some decks and a big reason to play it in yours. Archangel Avacyn is your big creature. It has flash, so you can use it to ambush some of the opponent attackers or simply play it with mana open at the end of the opponent turn. It is important to note the synergy with Selfless Spirit, which can make Avacyn flip and, thanks to his ability, will save your team from the damage dealt by Avacyn when she transforms.

Gideon, Ally of Zendikar is a one of the best threats in the format. The ability to turn in to an emblem boosting your creatures or to provide an endless stream of 2/2 Knights makes it one hell of a card. Declaration in Stone is a great removal spell and can save you from problematic creature. It is true that will provide some clues to your opponent, but he won’t have that much time to crak them because of your creatures army dealing a lot of damages every turn. Stasis Snare it’s the other good solution to problematic creatures. It play well with the rest of the deck because of the flash synergy. Smuggler’s Copter gives you, for just 2 mana, a 3/3 flying creature that allows you to loot whenever it attacks or blocks. It requires you to have another creature in play, but Crew 1 means that any creature you resolve will be enough to fly the Copter. Once you have the Copter active, you can run away with the game. It’s incredible how fast 3 points of flying damage can close out a game. Also the crew mechanic is awesome, being able to turn any of your small creatures into 3/3 flying looters is completely overpowered.

The mana base is quite simple, we have the best W/U duals available in the format. It is interesting though, the addition of Westvale Abbey, which can produce 1/1 tokens capable to crew the Thopter or serve as chump blockers. However if you can flip it, Ormendahl, Profane Prince can close the game very quickly.
