Deck Guide of the Day: Temur Colossus

Today’s Deck of the Day is dedicated to everybody who wants to go big, really big!

The deck uses a variety of useful artifacts to gum up the board and, just as importantly, reduce the cost of Metalwork Colossus. From there, Sanctum of Ugin can be sacrificed to find another colossus or an Elder Deep-Fiend, as the situation calls for it.

Metalwork Colossus can come down as early a turn 5, depending on how you build your deck. Most competitive versions won’t be concerned with playing underpowered cards just to facilitate the fastest Colossus imaginable, but instead with getting a bit of an engine going. Your goal is to chain some Colossus and than conclude the chain with an Elder Deep-Fiend to tap out your opponent.


With mana rocks that cost 3 and 4 mana to help ease the cost of the Colossus, you’re looking at the possibility of chaining a whole bunch of cheap 10/10 creatures into play and asking what your opponent can do about them. Colossus is going to ask you to play a lot of noncreature artifacts. Those that produce mana or draw you cards while staying in play are going to be the perfect fit here. The more artifacts you get into play, the more likely you’re going to be to get to return your destroyed Colossus, as well. In this category we have basically all the non-creature artifacts that the deck play: Prophetic PrismWoodweaver’s PuzzleknotCultivator’s Caravan and Hedron Archive.


Another artifact which will help you to stay alive, along and in combination with the Puzzleknot, is Deadlock TrapSkysovereign, Flagship Consul will often kill a creature when cast, it reduces Colossus cost by quite a bit, and your cheap Colossus can even jump in the ship the following turn to get in for 6 damage and take down another creature or planeswalker.


Other cards that enable the Colossus are Glint-Nest Crane and Sylvan Scrying which can find you the missing pieces to go off.


The mana base is simple and effective, the most important card is Sanctum of Ugin which let you chain you Colossus and Deep-Fiends. A spicy addition is Hanweir Battlements that can give your Colossus Haste.
