Deck Guide of the Day: B/R Graveyard

Hello Everybody, in standard, now, the metagame is starting to look fairly established. We have our gauntlet of decks and we know which are the decks to beat. So now it’s time to try to find the little edges. Capable of various shenanigans with Haunted Dead, Scrapheap Scrounger, and Prized Amalgam, the B/R Graveyard decks have seen some success.

Haunted Dead can return from your graveyard over and over again, but the cost of discarding multiple cards makes that not always the best proposition. Prized Amalgam is what really makes these decks work. This is a card that you can’t even hard cast if you want to, but with plenty of ways to get it into the graveyard, that’s not a big deal. You actively want it in your graveyard, and only in your graveyard, so focusing on getting it there is key. From there, you just need to draw your enablers to get it back. Scrapheap Scrounger is very aggressive and can keep coming back for more. Triggering Amalgam puts it over the top, but this is already one of the most played cards in aggressive strategies, and R/W Vehicles decks are splashing black for both this activated ability and the raw power of Unlicensed Disintegration.

Disintegration is an excellent removal spell and gives B/R decks with artifacts some reach. Coupled with Fiery Temper, you can burn people out while also interacting with creatures. In the deck there is also Lightning Axe which pairs well with the Temper.

Cathartic Reunion is the key card for this deck, The newest tech I’ve seen for this strategy is Ovalchase Daredevil. This deck is very focused on the graveyard and is heavy on discard outlets. Discarding cards to get your Haunted Dead back or to dig deeper with your Reunions is paramount to the strategy. Your first choice will always be Amalgams to get back, and getting Deads and Scroungers into your graveyard is great, but Daredevil gives you even more gas. In a deck that’s very centered on bringing back Scroungers over and over, especially with a ton of ways to get them into your graveyard, getting that raw card advantage back is awesome.  Ovalchase Daredevil can closely resemble Squee, Goblin Nabob when combined with Scrapheap Scrounger. It gives you another dimension to be able to force raw card advantage in the late game out of a deck that’s often sorely lacking that. Also, there’s Smuggler’s Copter. It’s really, really really good in every deck with creatures, but on another level with madness cards and graveyard nonsense.

B/R Graveyard is a great deck that is full of neat synergies, but that doesn’t mean it can’t be innovated. Looking for new cards in this format to put you over the top can still give you an edge over the competition.
