Deck Guide of the Day: R/G Marvel

Aetherworks Marvel violates some fundamental rules of how Magic is typically played. For just 4 mana, you can cast an Emrakul, the Promised End. This includes the cast trigger. All it asks of you is to have 6 energy laying around, and it will even help to add to your energy reserve itself once it’s in play. This is a card loaded with the potential for broken plays. With giant Eldrazi in the format, the ability to resolve one as early as turn 4 will put your opponent in a tough spot. The beautiful thing about Emrakul, the Promised End is that you don’t even really need to have it early, as taking an opponent’s later turn is just going to decimate them. And a 13/13 flying trample tends to end the game real quick.


In order to facilitate the Marvel, you’re going to need spare energy. Woodweaver’s Puzzleknot is a 2 card combo with Aetherworks Marvel. A hand with 4 lands, Puzzleknot, and Marvel threatens a turn 4 Emrakul, the Promised End with no other help. You’re also going to be gaining an additional 6 life, so it isn’t very realistic for you to die before getting an activation. Attune with Aether will fix your mana and boost your energy, Harnessed Lightning will kill problematic creatures and boost your energy, and Aether Hub will boost your energy just a little bit more. Being able to play 4 copies of Harnessed Lightning is quite nice against a creature like Spell Queller that has been giving all in Marvel decks fits.


Vessel of Nascency and Tormenting Voice help you get deeper. You can ignore the cards you don’t need, discard excess copies of cards you can’t cast in the case of Voice, and load up your graveyard with additional card types. This is critical because this version of Marvel is not all in. You can easily cast Emrakul, the Promised End for far less than 13 mana. You have 4 Vessel of Nascency to load the graveyard and add enchantments, Attunes and Voices add sorceries, and Marvels and Puzzleknots add artifacts. You have creatures and you have lands.


Kozilek’s Return is a card you already want in the graveyard whether you cast it or put in directly with Vessel or Voice. Chandra, Torch of Defiance is perfect. Not only can Chandra kill a number of tough creatures, such as Spell Queller or Archangel Avacyn, but she can ramp you up to hard casting Emrakul, the Promised End even earlier.

The other creatures in this deck aren’t the Ulamogs we’re used to. There are Servant of the Conduits to ramp your mana and get some blocks in. It’s also a creature that’s easy to send to the graveyard to help fuel delirium and Emrakul, the Promised End. The reason to have delirium is simple. Ishkanah, Grafwidow is taking over Standard.

Being able to play the end game of a typical G/B Delirium deck, casting Ishkanah with delirium and early Emrakul, the Promised End, combined with the explosive power of Aetherworks Marvel, makes this a powerful deck.
